This South African silver 5 Rand coin depicts the buffalo, one of Africa's "Big Five. This 1 troy ounce coin in BU grade was struck by the South African Mint in 99.9% pure silver. The coin is packaged in a beautiful illustrated information card.
. On the obverse we see a close-up of the buffalo's face. Along the bottom edge are the words "SOUTH AFRICA" and "BIG FIVE 2023" surrounding the coat of arms. The reverse shows two halves of the face of a buffalo with the words "FIVE RAND," "Ag 999" and "1 OZ" in the center in a small circle. When two coins are placed side by side, the middle halves again form a complete buffalo head.
The coins are also shown on the reverse. The animals belonging to the Big Five are the buffalo, lion, leopard, rhino and elephant. The term "Big Five" originated in the 19th century in the hunting world. The animals belonging to this group were known as the most dangerous animals to hunt. During this period, it was popular to shoot African game. Trophy hunters considered it an achievement to take them home. Nowadays, however, the expression has taken a milder form and refers to seeing the Big Five during game safaris on the African continent where people only shoot pictures of them.
